our organic winery
Seven generations of our family have
lived on this farm. Grandparents Rudolph and Tina were the
first to introduce the guestfarm
concept to the Robertson Wine Valley in 1991. Roelf,
cellar master - farmer at heart, Michelle, his wife and marketing
master mind, and Marinus Potgieter, winemaker, are the driving
forces behind Bon Cap. The new spectacular winery, with
a view of the underground barrel room through glass panels
from the tasting
room, is
a must-see for visitors. Together with our children, Wilmien,
Christina and Stefaan, our office staff and the team on the
farm, we are dedicated to the production of excellent quality
wines.
Bon
Cap Organic Wine Cellar produced its first wines in 2002,
the same year the farm received full organic
status. The first part of the winery was formerly
a tractor shed; we added open cement fermenters, a cooling system, pumps,
stainless steel tanks, barrels and premium quality grapes.
Even with these changes, we
could barely cope with a capacity of 80 tons in 2002.
As a result the newly rebuilt winery was added
in 2003, and we now have the capacity to handle 450 tons. Our
latest addition is a dry storage room, a laboratory and an
ageing room for bottled wines. Despite our modern cellar with
its glass panels which gives an exceptional view from the tasting
room floor of the underground barrel room where wines are left
to age, we still believe in the traditional 'hands-on' approach
- we harvest before dusk and the grapes are destemmed and fermented
as whole berries.
